金瓜石
Jinguashi · Taiwan
Our name
Named for a mountain of gold.
金瓜石, Jinguashi, is a mountain town above the sea in northeastern Taiwan. In 1894, gold prospectors climbing its slopes found a great outcrop of ore shaped like a 金瓜, a golden melon, and the mountain took its name.
A year later Taiwan came under Japanese rule, and a mining town grew up around the find, known in Japanese as Kinkaseki. A century of digging lowered the summit by more than a hundred meters. The outcrop that named the town is long gone, but the lesson of the place stays with us.
Real value lies deep, takes patience to reach, and is worth keeping.
Our mark is a golden pumpkin, the 金瓜 that gave the mountain its name, set beside a red seal carved with the same two characters.
